When Typography Moves With Music
Updated: Sep 3
I normally think about typography as something static, like text on a poster, website, or magazine. Lyric videos made me realize that typography can also become part of motion design. Instead of words just sitting on a screen, they can move, grow, rotate, disappear, and react to sound.
CeeLo Green’s Fuck You lyric video is a fun example of this. The video is mainly built around animated words rather than traditional footage, but it still manages to have a lot of personality. Different sizes, placements, colors, and movements emphasize certain lyrics and help match the energy of the song.
As a graphic design student, I think kinetic typography is interesting because it adds another design element that we don’t always have to consider in print: time. A designer has to think about when a word appears, how long we see it, how quickly it moves, and how that movement affects the way we read it.
It shows that typography doesn’t only communicate through the way letters look. Movement can completely change the tone of those letters too. A word slowly fading onto the screen communicates something very different from the same word suddenly slamming into the frame. It makes typography feel less like something we simply read and more like something we experience.
